Before deciding that dogs are too much maintenance because of their shedding, consider adopting a smaller breed of dog that does not shed or sheds minimally. Shedding can cause problems for people susceptible to pet allergies and can cling to furniture and clothes. Although easy maintenance is an important aspect of pet care, a dog’s intelligence is also something to consider.
The smartest and smallest dogs that do not shed share several of the same characteristics, such as trainability, obedience, and temperament. Some of these small dogs are even therapeutic. Many dogs have been bred for specific purposes and have the natural instincts necessary to complete tasks. It is fairly easy to find a breed of dog that does not shed and has the ability to obey many commands. It is important to make sure that a potential dog owner and dog have similar energy levels; this ensure that both the dog and owner are happy.
1. Poodle
Poodles are known for being one of the most hypoallergenic dogs. Of course, they are not completely hypoallergenic, but they do not shed as much as other breeds. People with dog allergies tolerate poodles much better than other breeds. Because a Poodle’s hair is so easily matted, they must visit the groomer consistently. Groomers often end up shaving the poodles due to the amount of brushing that would be involved; dogs are not very patient when they are being brushed.
This cuts down on the amount of shedding and dander build-up on the dog. People with dog allergies are usually concerned with the amount of shedding first and foremost, but then discover that the breed they chose is also highly intelligent. This realization usually occurs during training. Some breeds of dogs are more obedient than others. If training begins early and consistently, a poodle owner should be impressed with their results. They will obey commands and love to do tricks.
2. Miniature Schnauzer
Miniature Schnauzers have a course thick coat that consists of a surface layer, which sheds minimally, and an outer course layer that traps hair. Because of their coat, they need to be groomed often to prevent matting from the shedding of the surface layer. This is good for people with allergies because the hair does not make it past the outer layer, and they are groomed regularly.
These dogs are easy to train and eager to acquire new skills. To maximize their potential, it is best to train them as puppies. They will need a daily brisk walk or light jog to keep them happy and healthy. They are also very vocal, so make sure to be consistent and use rewards to keep them from barking unnecessarily. Schnauzers are very food driven, their food intake should be closely watched. A small backyard is the best environment; these dogs have an instinct to chase smaller animals.
3. Havanese
Havanese are very popular among people that suffer from dog allergies. Not only do they shed minimally, but they are also very smart and friendly. Their hair is very soft and smooth; they love to snuggle and be babied. They need daily brisk walks and the freedom to investigate in a small backyard. They get along with cats, other dogs, and children. Children should be careful when handling these dogs; Havanese are very delicate and fragile creatures.
Because they are so loving, they do not do well by themselves for lengthy periods of time. They might get anxious and cry and be destructive. Helping them cope with their anxiety should be part of their training. Do not forget to buy them chew toys because this will help with their anxiety. They are very smart and ready to make their owner happy, so training should be easy. Havanese love to play games and learn new tricks.
4. West Highland White Terrier (Westies)
West Highland White Terriers, also known as Westies shed minimally. They have a course coat that needs regular bath and brush, but they are one of the easiest coats to maintain. These dogs are very smart, but need to be trained as puppies, training should to be consistent. Westies tend to space out. However, they are very smart and make great watch dogs.
They are on constant alert and will bark at any unusual sounds. Of course, this should be addressed during training as well. It is well worth it, once they are trained, they will not let you down. Westies are incredibly loyal and obedient. They are great around other family pets. They often befriend other dogs and cats and are a fantastic addition to family situations or single dog owners. Havanese love brisk walks, light jogs, and the dog park.
